Inspiration: The Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute honors Comme des Garçons’s Rei Kawakubo

This year the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City pays homage to Japanese fashion designer, Rei Kawakubo, and her brand, Comme de Garçons. Kawakubo's style is known for going against classic tailoring, as her designs consist of deconstructed, abstract, and oversized silhouettes. Forty years ago, when she showed her first collection, an element that stood out was her preference for an ashy tone of black, which came off unpolished and the opposite of the fashion trends ruling the 80's-- opulence, logo-mania, and loud colors. Going against the trend was risky, but it allowed Kawakubo to create the iconically original style she is known for.

I had the opportunity to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art to admire the exhibit, and below are just some of my favorite looks.
 

A post about the Costume Institute Exhibit would not be complete without mentioning The Met Gala, my favorite fashion event of the year. The event occurs each year on the first Monday in May to formally and officially open the Costume Exhibit. Celebrities, models and athletes alike interpret the theme to pay homage to the theme or designer being honored. This year, few attendees opted for CDG, but we rounded up the ones that did and that stunned on the red carpet.
